It is a pleasure and honor to be Van Wig Elementary School’s new principal. I am fortunate to be a part of Bassett’s family since 2002, and I am privileged to work with our amazing Bassett students. During the last few months, I have been impressed with the dedication our teachers and staff members exhibit on a daily basis in providing the best learning opportunities for our students. It is our priority to establish a safe, positive, and student-centered climate that is conductive to high levels of learning.
During the 2013-2014 school year, Van Wig will be transitioning to the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). In preparing for this major shift, we are being proactive. Teachers have been extremely busy in the last few months attending professional development to be better prepared to transition to common core in the classroom. Our district has established a partnership with University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to provide trainings (both on-site and off-site) to our teachers in the area of mathematics. In the area of language arts, we have partnered with the California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP). Both training with UCLA and CRLP began during the summer of 2013. Additionally, targeted grade-levels teachers are working with a consultant, Cara Bergen, to improve and refine their teaching strategies during Reading to Intervention (RTI). All teachers have also been trained in English Language Development (ELD). Lastly, some teachers will be attending grade-level specific conferences on common core strategies.
I am proud of our teachers here at Van Wig and at our district. They have a huge task and are embracing it for the love of their students. Teachers have been collaborating with grade-level teams to create pacing guides and lesson plans. Common core lessons are beginning to surface in our classrooms. We are moving towards implementation!
To learn more about Common Core State Standards please select the tab “Common Core.” As parents, community members and/or stakeholders, it is important that we are informed of our school’s progress with regards to common core.
Here at Van Wig we have made strides, and we will continue to move toward full implementation of common core. I look forward to continue working with our dedicated teachers, support staff, parents, and community members as we prepare our children to be successful in college and career for the 21st Century.
